The City of Sonora encourages fair housing through housing sales and rental, as well as, through its housing rehabilitation and home-buyers programs. The City of Sonora is an Equal Housing Lender and does not discriminate on the basis of religion or religious affiliation, age, race, color, ancestry, national origin, sex, marital status, familial status (children), physical or mental disability, sexual orientation, or other arbitrary reason. The City of Sonora, the State of California, HUD and various local agencies are working together to ensure equal treatment of all citizens, everyone is urged to observe the Fair Housing Law.

Local Assistance:

If any City resident believes he or she has been discriminated against, the resident should contact the City’s Fair Housing Coordinator, Kim Campbell, at (209) 532-3508. The City will provide information, counseling and referral to the appropriate agency. Information is also available by contacting the Amador-Tuolumne Community Action Agency at (209) 533-1397.

State Assistance:

The California Department of Fair Employment and Housing enforces the Fair Employment and Housing Act (FEHA), the Ralph Civil Rights Act and the Unruh Civil Rights Act. If a person believes that they have experienced illegal discrimination or harassment, contact the Department at (800) 233-3212 or www.dfeh.ca.gov.

Federal Assistance:

Individuals can contact the Fair Housing Information Office in the Office of the Housing and Urban Development’s Assistant Secretary for Fair Housing & Equal Opportunity in Washington D.C. (800) 669-9777 or www.hud.gov.

Other Agency Assistance:

California Department of Consumer Affairs can assist with questions or complaints regarding landlord/tenant relationships, including repair issues, safety violations and Health and Safety Code violations. For further information call (800) 952-5210 or www.dca.ca.gov.
