Community Development
The Community Development Department
is located on the 2nd floor at City Hall. The Department can
be accessed from both Washington Street and Green Street. Community
development encompasses many aspects of the City and as such the
Department is responsible for numerous activities. All building and
planning activities for the City of Sonora are overseen by the
Department.
Planning activities are overseen by the Community
Development Director. The Sonora Planning Commission acts on all
applications for use permits, variances, design review, parcel maps, and
site plan review. The Commission makes recommendations to the City
Council on applications for tentative subdivision maps, amendments to
the Zoning Ordinance,
and amendments to the General Plan.
The Planning Commission consists of five members appointed by the Mayor
with confirmation of the City Council. All of its members must be
residents and electors of the City and are seated for four year terms of
office. The Planning Commission meets, in the City Hall Council
Chambers, on the second Monday of each month at 5:30 p.m.
The
Department reviews plans, issues permits and inspects projects covering
a variety of construction activities through the City. Building plan
check and inspection services are provided by the Building Inspector.
All reviews and inspections are conducted based upon the California
Building Codes, City Zoning Ordinance and other related provisions of
the Sonora Municipal Code.
The
Department implements several grant funded programs and projects for the
City including the
Microenterprise Assistance Program.
The Department also oversees City sponsored
events, the
Dragoon Gulch Trail,
Vision Sonora,
Sonora Opera Hall and
Certified Farmers Market.
